Volusia County Council Considers Allowing Dogs on Daytona Beach

by Lisa

Following the success of a permanent dog-friendly beach in Ormond Beach, the Volusia County Council has voted 6-0 to consider a second location in Daytona Beach. Councilman Troy Kent, who has been a strong advocate for more dog-accessible areas, proposed the idea to expand the dog-friendly beach options.

The nonprofit Daytona Dog Beach Inc., which has already committed to supporting the Ormond Beach site by providing dog waste bags and volunteers for clean-up, has expressed interest in assisting with a new Daytona Beach location as well. Kent emphasized the importance of collaboration with local partners to ensure the success of such initiatives.

In early April, the council had voted to make the dog-friendly beach between Milsap Road and Rockefeller Drive in Ormond Beach a permanent fixture. In addition to Ormond Beach, dogs are also allowed at Lighthouse Point Park in Ponce Inlet and Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach.

The potential addition of a dog-friendly beach in Daytona Beach has been met with enthusiasm by local residents and visitors, providing more opportunities for dogs to enjoy the sandy shores alongside their owners. The county will now work to explore options for the new location, with further decisions to be made in the coming months.
