PSU Students Build Dog Houses to Support Foster-Based Rescue

by Lisa

Students in Pittsburg State University’s Construction Systems Technology course have been working on a meaningful project that benefits both animals and their future careers. For several weeks, the students have been constructing dog houses, learning essential skills such as designing and framing structures, which they will later use in their teaching careers.

These dog houses aren’t just educational tools—they’re being donated to Southeast Kansas Animal Advocates, a foster-based rescue organization. This gesture is helping the organization provide better homes for animals while also reducing the financial burden of fostering.

Supporting Foster Families

Susan Bastion, Director of Southeast Kansas Animal Advocates, expressed how beneficial the donation is to the organization. “Every time we can help our fosters cut some of the costs of fostering additional animals, it definitely helps encourage other people to become fosters,” she said.

The students also appreciate the hands-on experience that this project provides. “For us, it helps us to watch our teachers teach instruction, and how they handled us, safety and all of those aspects,” said Gage Davenport, a PSU Junior. “Plus, we can use this in our everyday lives of fixing shingles, and any projects we have in the future.”

A Capstone Project for Students

The dog house project is part of a capstone assignment for the students, allowing them to complete a project from the ground up. They’re involved in every step of the process, including floor framing, wall framing, roof framing, and more.

“This is a real-world application of what they’ve learned, taking them through the whole process,” said Trevor Maiseroulle, PSU Assistant Instructional Professor. “They’re learning by doing, and this hands-on experience will be invaluable as they move forward in their careers.”

Building Connections and Giving Back

This project is not only helping animals find better homes, but it’s also fostering a deeper connection between the students and the community. It’s an excellent example of how education can have a direct and meaningful impact on local organizations and the people they serve.
