Stranded Dog Lola Rescued from Rising Tide Near Wirral’s Leasowe Lighthouse

by Lisa

Beach-goers gathered with concern along a Wirral shoreline Monday afternoon as a dog named Lola became stranded by the incoming tide near Leasowe Lighthouse in Moreton.

The Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team was quickly called to the scene on May 19, where they found the frightened dog isolated on a sandbank, unable to return to shore due to rising waters. Responding promptly, two Coastguard Officers launched a rescue sled, with the RNLI Hoylake Lifeboat Station Hovercraft also deployed to provide safety support.

Lola, visibly spooked, initially hesitated—but the encouragement of concerned beach-goers clapping, whistling, and offering treats helped guide her to safety. She eventually swam toward the rescue team and was safely brought aboard the sled and returned to shore, where she was reunited with her grateful owner.

HM Coastguard Officer in Charge Paul Ambrose praised the public’s efforts, saying:

“A huge thank you to everyone on the shore who helped by offering treats, clapping, and whistling to encourage Lola. Your support made a big difference!”

The rescue serves as a reminder of both the dangers of rising tides and the power of community compassion.
