David Peter, a member of the Sts’Ailes First Nation, is recovering from serious injuries after a vicious dog attack on Hemlock Valley Road north of Harrison Mills on Mother’s Day.
While on his regular six-kilometre walk, Peter noticed an older grey truck pulled over—moments before two dogs, believed to be pitbulls, charged and mauled him. Knocked to the ground, he endured what felt like five minutes of relentless bites, with one dog locking its jaws around his left bicep while the other tore into his right arm.
“I got over 50 stitches,” Peter said. “There was flesh falling out of my arm.”
What happened next is equally alarming. Although the dogs’ apparent owners—a man and woman—eventually restrained the animals and loaded them into their truck, they drove off without offering help, leaving Peter bleeding in the grass.
Despite the remote location, Peter managed to call 911 and spent 33 minutes on the phone with a dispatcher until paramedics arrived.
Community leaders are calling for answers and accountability. “We’re just disheartened,” said Sts’Ailes Councillor Tim Felix, highlighting the “complete disregard for our brother.”
The Agassiz RCMP confirmed the incident is under investigation but have not released further updates.
Peter, now surrounded by family and his community, is grateful to be alive — but deeply shaken. “I could have been dying. But they just drove by and left.”
