Chewy the Shih Tzu: From Abandoned Pup to “Healing Hearts” at Assisted Living Facility

by Lisa

Chewy, a 7-year-old Shih Tzu, is making a huge impact at The Philomena, an assisted living facility in Kyle, Texas, where he has become the beloved companion to both staff and residents. His journey to this heartwarming role began when Priscilla Duran, the executive director of the facility, found him wandering the streets of Austin.

Initially, Duran took Chewy to a vet, where a microchip revealed the dog‘s original owners. However, when they were contacted, they coldly refused to reclaim him, leaving Chewy stranded. Duran then made the decision to adopt him, but the day she found Chewy, she also got into a four-car accident, making it a challenging first day for both of them.

Despite her own difficulties, Duran opened her heart and home to Chewy. Her family, which already included two older rescue dogs, initially had concerns about how they would all adjust. However, when one of her older dogs greeted Chewy warmly, Duran knew it was meant to be.

Chewy now lives with Duran, but during the day, he accompanies her to work at The Philomena. There, he has become a local celebrity, known for his bow tie and sunglasses, as well as his ability to bring joy and movement to the residents. The elderly residents, including those with Alzheimer’s and dementia, have formed strong bonds with Chewy. His presence has brought smiles, sparked memories, and even encouraged physical activity as residents engage with him.

Duran shared how Chewy’s interactions with memory care patients are especially moving. Even those who are withdrawn due to dementia become more engaged when Chewy is placed in their lap. “Eyes are open, and smiles are happening,” Duran said. “It’s in those moments that you realize that you don’t always need words… so much is said without words between the two of them.”

Chewy, now the “healing heart” of The Philomena, has proven that sometimes, a dog’s love and companionship can heal in ways words cannot express.
