Dog That Survived After Losing Siblings At Birth Wins At Crufts

by Lisa

A West Highland White Terrier named Chance has beaten the odds. After losing all her siblings at birth and almost dying herself, she went on to win Best Puppy at Crufts.

Chance was born last year at Stellar Vets in Littlehampton. Her mother, Wilma, was taken to the clinic after her owner, Karen Harper, noticed an unusual discharge during her pregnancy.

The veterinary team decided to perform an emergency caesarean section. Dr. David Cahill led the procedure and found a dead puppy blocking the birth canal.

Two puppies were delivered, but they were very weak. The nursing staff quickly stepped in to care for them while Wilma recovered from the anesthesia.

Soon, it became clear that Wilma was not producing enough milk for the puppies. Karen took on the demanding task of hand-feeding them every two hours. Unfortunately, one of the puppies died two days later.

Dr. Cahill said, “Finding a dead puppy at the start was devastating. Losing the second one made it even harder. We love all animals, and this was a very difficult time for our team.”

Despite the challenges, Chance had a strong appetite and grew stronger each day.

Karen recalled, “Wilma’s birth was both surreal and exhausting. Losing two puppies was heartbreaking for all of us, but Chance was a fighter. She was determined to survive.”
