A new pay-it-forward initiative by Designs 4 K9’s in Sussex, N.B. is aiming to make dog grooming more accessible to those facing financial challenges. Launched by Rebecca Hetherington and her family at the end of April 2025, the “Paw Prints of Kindness” program is designed to help pet owners who may be struggling to afford grooming services.
Rebecca, who has been grooming dogs for over 11 years, recognized the need for such a service, especially during difficult times. “You never know when someone might lose a job or get sick. Financial hardship can happen to anyone, and everybody needs help at some point,” she explained.
The program, which is fully funded by community donations, offers anonymous assistance to those who require it. Pet owners in need can email the business, and, depending on the amount raised, the program aims to provide free grooming sessions to eligible pets. As of early May, the business had already given one free grooming and is close to funding another.
Her daughter Emily Hetherington shared the importance of the program in light of the current economic climate. “Even people who are well off can feel the financial strain today,” she said. “For many, giving up their pets is simply not an option.”
Each grooming session typically costs around $65, with appointments recommended every six to eight weeks. Regular grooming is not only crucial for a pet’s appearance but also for its health. Hetherington highlighted the benefits of proper grooming, such as preventing matting, ensuring good airflow for double-coated breeds, and detecting skin conditions or other health issues.
The program aims to offer two free grooming sessions each month, providing not just a fresh look but a valuable health check for pets in need.
Those interested in donating or receiving assistance can contact Designs 4 K9’s via email, phone, or in person at the shop on Main Street.
