Pet Advocacy Groups Call for Investigation into Euthanasia of Foster Dog Lucy

by Lisa

A foster dog‘s euthanization has sparked outrage among animal advocacy groups, with calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Lucy, a dog taken in by the Animal Foundation in Las Vegas, first entered their care in November after being found as a stray following an altercation with another dog. Although not deemed vicious, Lucy was adopted in December, only to be surrendered back to the foundation in March. After her return, Lucy was placed in a foster home, but soon after, an incident occurred that led to her euthanization.

While in her foster home, Lucy got into a fight with another dog at a park, which resulted in a person being bitten, causing significant injuries. The Animal Foundation decided to proceed with humane euthanasia. However, Layla Carswell, Lucy’s foster owner, expressed her doubts regarding the incident. She stated that during the two weeks Lucy was in her care, the dog had shown no signs of aggression and had been “nothing but respectful.”

Carswell, who had planned to adopt Lucy, was devastated by the sudden decision to euthanize the dog, particularly after she was led to believe the adoption was imminent. Nevada Voter for Animals president, Gina Greisen, also voiced concerns, highlighting that Carswell was scheduled to finalize the adoption just days before the euthanasia decision was made.

In response, pet advocacy groups, led by Councilwoman Victoria Seaman, are demanding answers. They argue that Lucy’s euthanization was premature, given that she was not considered vicious. According to an email from Jim Andersen, the Chief of Code Enforcement and Animal Protection Services for Clark County, the decision to euthanize Lucy was made without a thorough investigation into the events leading up to the incident.

The Animal Foundation, in a statement to News 3, explained that the final decision on euthanizing the dog rested with the county. Despite ongoing protests from advocacy groups, the foundation stood by its decision, citing legal protocol.

Advocates are now calling for a full investigation to determine what truly transpired with Lucy’s case and who made the decisions that led to her death. They are seeking justice for the dog, with the hope that a more comprehensive review of the situation might prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
