Woman Left ‘Shaking’ After Dog Walker Hangs Her Teacup Chihuahuas In The Air

by Lisa

Angela James, 63, from Peacehaven, has described her shock after an aggressive dog attacked her two teacup chihuahuas. During the incident, the other dog’s owner lifted Angela’s dogs into the air by their leads.

The attack happened on Wednesday afternoon as Angela was walking her tiny dogs, Elvis and James, near Firle Road. She noticed a woman approaching with a large dog that was off its lead.

Angela said, “When I see a dog not on a lead, I assume the owner knows their dog is safe to be off the lead. But immediately, the dog lunged at my dogs. They started yelping. I shouted at the owner to put her dog on a lead, but she ignored me. I saw she didn’t even have a lead with her.”

A nearby delivery driver came to Angela’s aid and also asked the owner to control her dog. According to Angela, the owner refused and even said, “You get my dog,” when asked to help, to which the delivery driver replied, “No, I’m not doing it.”

In a shocking move, the owner grabbed Angela’s lead and pulled her dogs up into the air, holding them as bait while her dog tried to reach them. Angela said, “She had no right to do that.”

During this, Jess, one of the tiny dogs weighing less than 2kg, slipped out of her collar and fell to the ground. Jess then ran under a parked car, with the other dog chasing her around the vehicle. Eventually, the owner caught her dog by the collar and walked away.

Angela said the owner seemed scared of her dog and could not control it. She added, “It was a dangerous dog. This could have ended much worse, especially since small children play nearby. I was shaking. It was horrible.”

Jess suffered an injury to her leg, likely from falling out of her collar, and has been limping since.

A Sussex Police spokesperson confirmed they received a report of a dog biting another dog near Firle Road at about 4 pm on May 13. No people were injured, and neither dog was of a banned breed. The matter has been classified as a civil issue.

Inspector Matt Songhurst of the Surrey and Sussex Police dogs unit said, “We are aware of an increase in dog attack reports in Sussex and Surrey. We remind all dog owners to keep their pets under control at all times and to understand the laws relating to their dog’s breed and behaviour.”
