A dog with a plastic jug stuck on its head is now safe after being rescued in south Houston on Monday. The Houston SPCA responded to an animal cruelty report that led to the dog’s rescue.
The jug, believed to be part of an automatic pet feeder, had become wedged around the dog’s neck while it searched for food. Though the jug’s opening allowed limited airflow, the dog was unable to eat or drink for an extended time.
“This was a life-threatening situation,” said Dr. Roberta West, Chief Veterinarian and Vice President of Veterinary Medicine at the Houston SPCA. “Had the report come in later, this dog’s story might have ended very differently.”
SPCA veterinary staff managed to safely remove the jug without sedation. The dog is now stable and recovering.
During the rescue, officials found multiple abandoned animals on the same property, including several dogs, a rabbit, and a deceased rabbit. All surviving animals were removed from the site. The operation was carried out with a warrant served by Harris County Constable Precinct 1.
The Houston SPCA continues to investigate the case and is reminding the public to report any suspected animal cruelty immediately.
