A violent dog attack at Lam Tei Pet Garden in Tuen Mun has ignited public debate about pet owner accountability, after a young dog named “Milk Girl” was mauled by another dog, sustaining serious injuries that required multiple rounds of veterinary treatment.
The incident occurred on the evening of 11 May, when Milk Girl, accompanied by her owner, was out for a routine walk. Without warning, a black mongrel named “Durian” lunged at her, delivering a savage bite to her chest. The attack left Milk Girl bleeding and visibly shaken. Her owner immediately intervened to separate the dogs and rushed her for urgent medical attention.
Eyewitnesses at the park identified Durian’s owners as Mr. and Mrs. Lai. According to Milk Girl’s owner, the couple initially attempted to leave the scene, but returned briefly after being confronted by concerned bystanders. Only after persistent requests did they provide their contact details and reluctantly agreed to pay HK$2,000 toward the HK$2,700 veterinary bill.
However, Milk Girl’s health deteriorated sharply after the initial treatment. She began displaying severe symptoms, including uncontrollable urination, excessive drooling, and signs of extreme discomfort. Alarmed by her worsening state, her owner sought emergency care at a 24-hour veterinary clinic, accumulating further medical expenses.
Despite being provided with detailed receipts and updates on Milk Girl’s condition, the Lais refused to cover the additional costs. Mr. Lai reportedly dismissed the severity of the injuries, stating, “Mongrels heal quickly with rest; further treatment is unnecessary,” before severing all communication by blocking Milk Girl’s owner.
The couple’s response has sparked widespread condemnation within the local community. Social media users and fellow pet owners have criticized their apparent lack of empathy and refusal to take full responsibility for the incident.
Milk Girl’s owner expressed deep emotional distress over the ordeal. “Watching her suffer is unbearable. She’s just a 10-month-old puppy, and her cries still haunt me. As her guardian, we feel guilty for not shielding her from harm,” the owner shared.
The incident has also prompted calls for greater vigilance among pet owners visiting Lam Tei Pet Garden. “If the situation were reversed, I wouldn’t hesitate to fully support the injured dog’s recovery. This indifference is both unacceptable and disappointing,” the owner added.
As the public debate intensifies, the case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities pet owners must bear, not only for their animals but for the safety of others in shared public spaces.
