Pet Valu stores in Gibsons and Sechelt are inviting locals to lace up their walking shoes for two important community events that support a cause close to their hearts: the Lions Foundation of Canada’s Dog Guide programs.
On May 25, Danielle and Kyle Hermary, the new owners of Pet Valu Gibsons, will host the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides to raise funds for the Canine Vision program. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the walk, which has raised over $21 million across Canada to train guide dogs for individuals with disabilities.
“It’s our first time participating, but we’re excited to be part of something so impactful,” said Danielle Hermary. “We believe in this cause and look forward to connecting with our community.”
The walk kicks off at 10 a.m. with registration at the Gibsons Pet Valu store, located at 900 Gibsons Way. The walk begins at 11 a.m. and follows a scenic route to Banditry Cider on Pratt Road, a pet-friendly venue hosting a post-walk social. Participants are encouraged to wear red in support of the Canine Vision program and to enjoy refreshments and photo opportunities after the walk.
The funds raised will go towards providing guide dogs at no cost to Canadians in need. It costs approximately $35,000 to train each guide dog, which helps individuals with vision impairments safely navigate daily obstacles and public spaces.
In Sechelt, another walk will take place on June 1, led by Sunshine Coast Lions Club Zone Chair Bill Conway and his guide dog, Lionheart. The walk starts at 10:30 a.m. at Trail Bay Mall and concludes at Hackett Park, where participants will receive refreshments. The event is a great opportunity for community members to support the Lions Foundation’s mission while enjoying a social outing with their pets.
Both walks are open to participants of all ages, with or without dogs. The Gibsons walk is a rain or shine event, and registration is available online or at the store. The Sechelt walk costs $20 to participate, and online registration is also available.
For those unable to attend, there are opportunities to sponsor dog-and-handler teams and donate directly to the cause.
These walks not only raise crucial funds but also foster a sense of community involvement while helping raise awareness for a program that changes lives across Canada.
