by Lisa

The Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is helping to feed thousands of pets across the province after receiving a large donation of pet food.

Pet food company ZIWI donated $2.2 million worth of food. With this gift, the Alberta SPCA has been able to provide nearly 23,000 bags of cat and dog food to many animal welfare groups.

In a news release on Monday, the SPCA said many shelters are full and struggling financially to feed the animals in their care.

“We are in an animal welfare crisis,” said Leanne Niblock, executive director of the Alberta SPCA. “This generous donation from ZIWI will help feed hungry pets and ease financial pressures on pet owners and shelters.”

ZIWI regularly checks its inventory to find products that should be used before their expiry dates. Instead of letting these items go to waste, the company donates them to groups like the Alberta SPCA, where they can quickly help pets in need, said Jessica Dulin, ZIWI’s director of marketing and communications.

Some of the donated food is also helping pets displaced by wildfires in Alberta and other prairie regions.

Originally, more than 37,000 bags were meant for Alberta. However, some of the donation also went to Winnipeg to address urgent needs in Manitoba, the release said.
