If you’re a pet owner, you know how much money goes into caring for your furry friend. One of the biggest costs is dog food, and unfortunately, prices are expected to rise even more.
Research from dog brand TopDog predicts that by 2035, UK dog owners will spend 50% more on dog food each month than they do now.
TopDog also found signs of ‘shrinkflation’—when products get smaller but prices stay the same or even go up. The company studied past prices of popular dog foods and other pet items like poop bags and grooming gloves. They used data from Zooplus and the Wayback Machine to compare prices from years ago to today.
For example, Royal Canin Maxi Adult dog food cost £39.99 (around $54) for 15 kilograms (33 pounds) ten years ago. Now, it costs £60.99 ($83) for the same amount—a price increase of almost 53%.
Pedigree Adult Complete kibble was £22.99 ($31) for 15kg in 2015. Today, it costs nearly £30 ($41) for only 12kg (26.5 pounds).
Even cheaper options like Chappie canned dog food have seen big price hikes. The cost for 12 cans more than doubled between 2015 and now. TopDog predicts that by 2025, the price could rise another 133%. That means a dozen cans could cost almost £50 ($68) by 2035.
In short, dog owners in the UK should prepare for significantly higher pet food bills in the years ahead.
