The BC SPCA reports that ongoing economic uncertainty and rising living costs are leading to fewer donations of pet food and supplies across their animal centres in British Columbia.
By the end of May, their pet food bank program had provided over 298,000 meals to pets in need—about 4,180 more meals than the same time last year. These meals have helped feed over 20,000 vulnerable animals across the province, including 623 dogs and 851 cats in the Cariboo and North region.
Diane Waters, Outreach Specialist at BC SPCA, acknowledged the financial difficulties donors face but warned that without an increase in donations, the organization may struggle to support all pet guardians who rely on their help.
While the BC SPCA has a limited budget to purchase food to cover donation shortfalls, resources are being stretched thin.
Waters emphasized the importance of providing this lifeline to keep families and their pets together during challenging times.
