In a heartwarming and unusual act of devotion, Bill Dorris, a retired entrepreneur from the United States, left his entire fortune—$5 million—to his loyal border collie, Lulu, ensuring her future care and well-being after his passing.
Lulu the Furry Millionaire
At just 8 years old, Lulu, the border collie, has become one of the wealthiest dogs in the world following the death of her 84-year-old owner. In his will, Dorris specifically allocated $5 million to be placed in a trust for Lulu’s care, making her an unlikely beneficiary of a sizable fortune. The will clearly stated, “$5,000,000 will be transferred to a trust to be formed after my death for the care of my border collie, Lulu.”
A Life of Love, Not Luxury
Despite the massive inheritance, Lulu will not live a life of extravagance. Her new guardian, 88-year-old Martha Burton, had already cared for Lulu during times when Dorris was traveling and has now been legally designated as the dog‘s caretaker. Burton, who will manage the trust, is not allowed to access it freely; instead, she will be reimbursed for “reasonable monthly expenses” related to Lulu’s care.
As Burton explained to local media, “There won’t be any diamond collars or doggy mansions. Lulu is happy, and that’s what matters.” The focus will remain on Lulu’s comfort and well-being, not indulging in luxuries that might be expected with such a fortune.
No Heirs, No Regrets
Dorris passed away unmarried and without children. While his estate—still going through probate—includes significant real estate holdings and other investments, Lulu’s position as the sole heir of such a substantial amount reflects the deep bond between the two. Burton, who had seen firsthand how much Dorris cherished his dog, commented, “Honestly, I don’t know what to think. It’s almost impossible to spend that kind of money on one dog—but I’d like to try.”
A Final Act of Loyalty
To many, this bequest may seem eccentric, but for those who knew Dorris, it’s a testament to the profound love and loyalty he shared with Lulu. The dog was more than just a pet; she was his closest companion, and his final act was one of unwavering devotion.
