Though Danielle Collins didn’t clinch the Miami Open trophy this year, she walked away with an even more meaningful victory: a new pet. After encountering an injured dog near Hard Rock Stadium, Collins’ quick actions saved the animal’s life, leading to a heartwarming adoption story.
Collins shared the details in a post-match interview after her third-round win over Rebeka Masarova on Saturday. She and her team discovered the dog, badly injured after being struck by a car, lying in the road just days before her tournament match. They rushed the animal to a nearby hospital, where it underwent emergency surgery and required further treatment for lung contusions. Collins vowed to adopt the dog if it survived.
Despite her own tournament setback when she was eliminated by World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Round of 16, Collins kept fans updated on the pup’s progress. On social media, she posted a touching photo of herself with the dog, who she named “Crash Marino Collins”—a tribute to both the crash he survived and Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino.
By Wednesday, after five days of oxygen therapy, the good news came: Crash was discharged, officially adopted, and settling into his new home. Collins proudly shared the update, saying, “His breathing is back to normal, his wounds are healing, and he is definitely enjoying all the love he is receiving.”
Expressing her gratitude, Collins wrote, “It was so incredibly painful to witness a dog in so much pain after being hit by a car, and left in the middle of the road with so many people driving by.” She added, “I’m just grateful I was able to be there and get him the care he needed.”
Crash now joins Collins’ family of four other dogs, including her famous Labradoodle, Quincy, who accompanied her during her rise in tennis. Collins humorously noted that Quincy now has a “new brother.”
“Thank you to everyone who prayed for Crash,” Collins concluded on Instagram, extending her gratitude to the veterinarians who helped save him.
