Kern County Animal Services is asking the public to come forward with credible information after a video circulated online showing an injured dog abandoned near a dumpster in East Bakersfield.
The footage, recorded early Monday morning, depicts a person leaving the injured dog beside a dumpster. Animal rights advocates say the dog is now believed to have died.
“This is not the first time,” said Sandy Giurlani, a longtime local volunteer and animal advocate. “Where do I start?” she added, overwhelmed. Another supporter nearby echoed her sentiment: “You do not want to know.”
Advocates like Giurlani have repeatedly warned the Kern County Board of Supervisors about the worsening stray animal crisis. “We rescue one, and the next day there are 10, 20, 30 more,” Giurlani said. “From puppies to seniors — they’re everywhere.”
At a recent board meeting, activists spent over 30 minutes urging the county to do more. Many now point to what they see as a lack of meaningful action by Kern County Animal Services in curbing abandonment and abuse. Some sources suggest that organized demonstrations are being planned in response.
This incident has renewed calls for increased funding, stricter enforcement, and community education around animal welfare.
Eyewitness News reached out to both Kern County Animal Services and local advocacy groups for comment but has not received a response as of publication time.
