Meet Dash, an energetic and playful dog who’s been waiting for a forever home for nearly 400 days at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA). This sweet, 6-year-old pup is described as curious, spirited, and always ready for an adventure.
Despite his lengthy stay at the shelter, Dash is still full of hope and love. “More than ONE WHOLE YEAR IN THE SHELTER,” AWLA shared in a Facebook post, urging potential adopters to give this deserving dog the chance he needs to thrive in a loving home.
Though Dash can be a little nervous at first, his affectionate nature quickly shines through. Once he warms up, he’s eager to engage in games of tug and loves to be the center of attention. Crate-trained and clicker-trained, Dash knows several commands like sit, shake, and check-in, and he walks beautifully on a leash.
However, Dash’s ideal home is one where he can be the only dog. Due to his reactiveness to other dogs, AWLA recommends a home without other pets and preferably with older children or none at all. Because of his dog-reactivity, Dash wouldn’t do well in an apartment or townhouse where he might frequently encounter other dogs. The shelter believes he would be happiest in a single-family home where he can enjoy a calmer environment.
The shelter is committed to supporting Dash’s future family. In addition to his adoption fee being waived, Dash’s new owners will receive continued support from AWLA’s Behavior and Training Team to help him adjust to his new home. His new family will also receive a year’s supply of food, a shopping spree at Pampered Pet Boutique Barkery, a $250 gift card to Sniffspots (private dog parks), and a behavior modification coaching package with a local positive reinforcement dog trainer.
Dash may have spent over a year waiting for a home, but with the right family, he’s ready to bring joy and adventure to a lucky household.
