A company in Washington state has voluntarily recalled a cat food product due to possible contamination with bird flu.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that Wild Coast, based in Olympia, Washington, announced the recall on March 1. The affected product is its frozen Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula raw pet food for cats. It may be contaminated with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1, also called bird flu. This virus can spread to animals that eat the contaminated food.
The recalled cat food comes in 16-ounce and 24-ounce packages. It was sold in Washington and Oregon. The affected batches have lot numbers #22660, #22653, #22641, #22639, #22672, and #22664, with a best buy date of December 2025.
Wild Coast founder Tyler Duncan said in a Facebook post on March 3 that the recall is a precautionary step.
In a letter on the company’s website, Duncan said the recall is “out of an abundance of caution.” He also confirmed that one pet has died and expressed sympathy for the owner.
“The safety of our products and that of our customers’ beloved pets is always our top priority. We were devastated to learn of the passing of a beloved pet, and our hearts go out to the owner,” he wrote.
