KITAAKITA, Akita — Two Akita dog siblings have been officially appointed as directors at Odate-Noshiro Airport on May 18. The dogs, wearing colorful bandanas, posed for photos with travelers at the airport.
The appointed dogs are Rensui, a male, and Ruka, a female. Both have red fur and belong to Masato Chiba, 67, from Odate in Akita Prefecture. Odate Mayor Kensuke Ishida, who also leads the airport service promotion council, made the appointment. This ceremony marked the 10th anniversary of a project that has Akita dogs welcoming arriving passengers since June.
The event, held on the airport’s lawn, also celebrated the dogs’ upcoming fourth birthdays on May 23. Chiba received a letter of appointment in front of a large crowd. Mayor Ishida expressed his wishes, saying, “I hope they will bring warmth and excitement to visitors at the airport and help promote the charm of our region.”
