Regina police shot and injured a dog on Wednesday morning while investigating a theft involving two dogs.
Officers responded to a report of stolen dogs at a residence on the 1500 block of Athol Street around 8:10 a.m. CST. Police said they were speaking with an individual outside the home when the two dogs involved in the investigation suddenly ran out of the front door and toward the officers. One officer then shot one of the dogs.
The injured dog received immediate first aid at the scene before being transported to a veterinary clinic for treatment. Authorities have confirmed that the dog sustained non-life-threatening injuries, specifically to its front leg.
The incident is under review, as any use of force by officers is subject to a thorough examination. The Regina Police Service’s Use of Force Review Board will conduct an internal investigation, and the case will also be reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission.
