A young dog named Bill is recovering at the Humane Society of Rome after being found in distressing condition due to severe animal cruelty. The dog, discovered by concerned bystanders, had multiple injuries, including breaks in his leg and wounds scattered across his body. Despite the severity of the injuries, the dog’s owner refused to seek the necessary medical care for him, prompting community members to step in and convince the owner to surrender Bill.
The Humane Society of Rome quickly stepped in, and upon examination, veterinarians discovered two separate fractures in Bill’s right front leg—one of which had affected the growth plate, and the other near his wrist. The lack of timely medical treatment resulted in severe tissue damage, and as a consequence, the leg will need to be amputated.
Humane Society of Rome Manager and Veterinarian, Robin Genovese-Kaminski, praised the community’s bravery in speaking out for Bill, noting that their swift action in reaching out to the shelter made a significant difference. “It’s all networking and helping each other… they were very brave to step up and help him,” Genovese-Kaminski stated, acknowledging the vital role that local residents played in ensuring Bill’s safety.
Bill was brought to the shelter with his severely injured leg wrapped in a t-shirt and duct tape. Despite the extent of the damage, veterinarians are optimistic about his recovery. “Once the leg is amputated, they feel much better,” Genovese-Kaminski explained. “Three-legged dogs do really well, and Bill will adapt. You won’t even know, and he won’t know.”
The surgery to remove Bill’s leg is scheduled for next week, and the shelter is hopeful that the operation will help him feel better and begin his healing journey. The Humane Society of Rome is also working closely with the Rome Police Department to hold the responsible individuals accountable for the abuse.
In the meantime, the shelter has started a donation campaign to help cover the costs of Bill’s surgery, urging the public to assist in ensuring that he receives the best care possible. As his road to recovery continues, Bill is receiving the love, compassion, and care he needs to heal from his traumatic experience. Despite the abuse he endured, the shelter’s staff believes that love and care will help him move forward, proving the resilience and forgiving nature of animals.
