LA Animal Services is facing an alarming overcrowding crisis, putting the lives of healthy, adoptable pets at risk of euthanasia simply due to a lack of space. One of the dogs facing this grim fate is Poochie, a 4-year-old pitbull who has been surrendered to the shelter five times, most recently by a homeless woman. Despite being a shelter favorite and having no history of aggression, Poochie’s future hangs in the balance.
Volunteers have tried to help by sharing Poochie’s story on social media, hoping to find a permanent home. According to animal shelter rescuer Whitney Smith, “He’s a beautiful dog with people and loves other dogs. This is not what he deserves just because his first adoption didn’t work out.” Poochie was scheduled for euthanasia last Wednesday but received a temporary extension. However, his time is running out, and he has once again been placed on the urgent list.
Shelter workers report that Poochie, though he bites his leash, has no history of aggression or biting people. Still, his behavior has raised concerns, and the shelter’s space constraints leave them with little option. The city’s shelters are currently operating at 126% capacity, and LA Animal Services has warned the public about the possibility of euthanizing animals if adoption rates do not increase soon.
“We really are encouraging the community to help us by adopting or fostering a pet,” said Agnes Sibal, a spokeswoman for LA Animal Services. With so many dogs in need of homes, the shelter is hoping that more people will come forward to offer these animals a chance at a better life before it’s too late.
