In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, we’re highlighting an incredible initiative that pairs veterans with specially trained service dogs. West Virginia University’s Hearts of Gold program is dedicated to supporting veterans who have mobility impairments or psychiatric disabilities by matching them with service dogs trained for their unique needs.
The Hearts of Gold Program and its Impact
Most of the dogs involved in the Hearts of Gold program come from the local nonprofit Human–Animal Bond. These dogs are bred with the potential to become service animals and undergo rigorous training to prepare them for their roles. The program works with a variety of training methods, including programs that involve inmates at local prisons. The collaboration benefits both the dogs and the inmates, who gain valuable skills like patience, responsibility, and social interaction. Many of the inmates involved later transition to careers as dog trainers in the community.
The Role of Service Dogs for Veterans
The dogs are trained to assist veterans with a variety of challenges. For example, veterans with PTSD may need a dog specifically trained to interrupt troubling nightmares. Other dogs help their owners stay aware of their surroundings, alerting them when someone is approaching to prevent startling or anxiety. Additionally, many dogs are equipped to recognize signs of anxiety, approaching their owner to provide comfort during panic attacks or grounding exercises.
Matching Dogs and Veterans for Success
Finding the right dog for each veteran is a carefully considered process. It’s crucial to ensure the match is successful for both the dog and the veteran. Service dogs are expected to handle significant responsibilities, so the program makes sure that the dogs are not overstressed. As Hearts of Gold emphasizes, the health and well-being of both the veteran and the dog are equally important.
This program not only provides crucial mental and physical support for veterans but also fosters a deep connection between the dogs and their new families. The dogs are true heroes, helping to bring comfort, security, and a sense of stability to those who need it most.
