A rescue center in Virginia recently celebrated the long-awaited adoption of a dog named Yuki, who had spent 227 days in their care before finally finding her forever home.
Yuki arrived at the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation in September 2024, alongside her nine newborn puppies. The family had been abandoned at a rural shelter in southwest Virginia. The rescue center took them in, allowing the pups to decompress and connect with foster families. As the months passed, all of Yuki’s puppies found homes, leaving her behind.
Despite her puppies getting adopted before her, Yuki remained hopeful. As often happens in shelters, puppies and younger dogs tend to be adopted faster than older dogs. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), senior dogs have a 25% adoption rate, while puppies and young dogs have a 60% adoption rate.
Yuki, however, didn’t lose her positive spirit. Her energetic personality and eagerness to please made her a favorite among volunteers and staff. She loved treats, playing, and meeting new people, showing off her smart and youthful nature.
After waiting patiently for months, Yuki’s story took a turn when two volunteers, who had fallen in love with her during occasional sleepovers, realized they couldn’t imagine their lives without her. Yuki’s patience had paid off, and she was finally adopted into her new home earlier this month.
To celebrate her adoption, the rescue painted a special banner for Yuki, which she joyfully ran through to greet her forever family. “Yuki’s story is a beautiful reminder of the power of connection and the magic that can happen when dogs and people are given the time and space to bond,” the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation shared in a Facebook post.
On her adoption day, there was much excitement, and Yuki even took a well-deserved nap amidst the celebrations. As for her new life, she’s settling in wonderfully, and her new family is thrilled to have her.
