Guilty Verdict for Dog Owners Following Mauling of 5-Year-Old: Dog to Be Confined During Outdoor Activities

by Lisa

DRIGGS — In a heart-wrenching case stemming from a brutal attack that left a 5-year-old boy hospitalized, two Teton County residents, Trent Dayton and Joey “Lisa” Dayton, residing just outside of Driggs, have been found guilty of two misdemeanor charges related to “keeping a dangerous dog.” The incident occurred on April 6, prompting legal action that concluded with the Daytons being placed on two years of probation.

The charges against Trent and Joey Dayton stemmed from the April 6 attack, which saw their dog crossing the property line and entering the neighboring yard of John and Jessie Vrabrec. The dog’s access to the Vrabrecs’ yard was facilitated by a substantial accumulation of snow along the fence on the Daytons’ property. Tragically, the dog then launched an attack on the Vrabrecs’ young son, Sawyer.

The aftermath of the attack necessitated Sawyer’s immediate airlift to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. The young child sustained grievous injuries, including severe wounds to his face, legs, arms, and eye.

During the bench trial held on September 7 in the presence of Magistrate Judge Jason Walker, Teton County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lauretta Welch argued that the Daytons’ dog posed a threat to public safety. This led to the charges against the Daytons, culminating in their guilty verdict.
