Arizona Woman Arrested for Abandoning Elderly Blind Dog on Highway

by Lisa

A 62-year-old Arizona woman, Karen Black, hailing from Phoenix, was taken into custody after her elderly, visually impaired dog was discovered wandering along a highway in Cochise County. This incident transpired last month, with Black now facing charges of cruelty to animals in connection to the abandonment.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office encountered the distressing situation when Sheriff Mark Dannells and his wife came across the frail canine on an exit ramp in Benson, Arizona. Located approximately 45 miles southeast of Tucson, the exit ramp connects to Interstate 10 and Skyline Road.

“Sheriff Dannels and his wife, Nickie, secured the shaken dog in their vehicle,” as detailed in a Facebook post shared by the Sheriff’s Office, which also included a photograph of the elderly dog safely resting on the car’s floor.

Subsequently, a county animal control officer took charge of the unidentified dog and, upon investigation, discovered that it had an embedded microchip. The chip’s information indicated the last known owner to be a resident of Maricopa County.

Despite their earnest efforts, the agency faced unresponsive communications while attempting to contact the dog’s previous owner, deepening the mystery surrounding the circumstances leading to the dog’s abandonment.
