Chance the Therapy Dog Inspires Children with Limb Differences

by Lisa

Chance, a remarkable therapy dog, is making a profound impact at Shriners Children’s Lexington, where he provides comfort and inspiration to children facing both hospital visits and life with limb differences.

Before embarking on his therapy dog journey, Chance faced his own struggles. He was discovered in dire condition, emaciated and with a bullet lodged in his shoulder. Camp Jean Rescue stepped in, providing Chance with essential medical care and love. Unfortunately, his injuries were severe, resulting in the amputation of his left front leg, collarbone, and shoulder.

However, Chance’s resilience shone through, and he quickly found a loving adopter. Andrea White, Chance’s handler, was drawn to his gentle and intelligent nature, as well as his obedience. Having worked as a nurse at Shriners Children’s in the past, she saw an opportunity to focus on visiting patients with limb deficiencies.

After undergoing therapy pet training through Love on a Leash, Chance became a certified therapy dog. His visits to Shriners Children’s Lexington have become a source of joy for both children and adults. During these visits, Chance enters the clinic exam rooms, where the children’s faces light up upon his arrival. Many of them eagerly get down on the floor to be closer to him, as do parents and siblings. Everyone is curious about his story and how he lost his leg.
