Local 10 News recently covered a tragic incident in a Hollywood neighborhood over the weekend, involving a fatal attack on a small dog. In the wake of this incident, a woman has come forward, recounting her own harrowing encounter with the same dog last year and raising concerns about the safety of the neighborhood.
The incident occurred last Sunday in the Liberia neighborhood, where a 3-year-old Shih Tzu named Luna was tragically killed by a large, unrestrained dog. According to Deanna Bettineschi, a spokesperson for the Hollywood Police Department, officers discovered Luna’s lifeless body outside a residence on Raleigh Street, located west of North 26 Avenue.
Abe Massre, Luna’s owner, shared video footage with Local 10, illustrating his desperate efforts to save his beloved pet from the attacking dog. Despite his attempts, Luna could not be rescued in time. Massre described the distressing scene, recounting how the attacking dog had Luna by the neck, leaving her helpless and crying out in pain.
This isn’t the first time the aggressive dog has caused harm. Broward County court records reveal a previous incident in July, where the same dog, a pit mix, attacked another woman while out for a walk. The victim, who chose to remain anonymous, recalled being bitten multiple times while trying to protect her two Chihuahuas. Expressing her ongoing fear, she highlighted feeling unsafe in her own neighborhood due to the perceived threat posed by the dog.
Massre is now questioning why the dog wasn’t classified as dangerous following the initial attack and is advocating for its euthanasia. He emphasized the responsibility of pet owners to take appropriate action, urging the owner of the aggressive dog to do what is necessary.
Efforts by Local 10 to contact the owner for comment have been unsuccessful. Meanwhile, discussions are underway with the Hollywood Police Department regarding the appropriate course of action concerning the status of the dog.
