A man in his 30s has been arrested after a tragic incident in Norwich, where a dog was found dead with horrific injuries. The dog, a three-year-old Shar Pei named Bear, was reported missing earlier in May. After an outpouring of concern from the local community following a Facebook appeal by Bear’s owner, the dog was sadly discovered dead in a bin on May 5.
According to local resident Tye Smyth, who witnessed the dog’s condition, Bear had sustained “six to seven stab wounds,” and his head appeared to have been “caved in.” The dog’s body was found in the bin of a man living in the Bull Close Road area.
Bear was believed to have been stolen overnight between May 1 and May 2, 2025, from a property on Magdalen Close. Police launched an investigation after Bear’s body was found, and a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of dog abduction, causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, and criminal damage. He was questioned at Wymondham Police Station and has since been released on bail as investigations continue.
The news of the gruesome discovery spread quickly across local Facebook groups, where many residents expressed their anger and sorrow over the incident. Tye Smyth, who created a Facebook group seeking justice for Bear, mentioned that he had handed over Bear’s body to the police and RSPCA as evidence. The group has garnered 692 members, all calling for justice for the deceased dog.
Authorities have reassured the public that the investigation is ongoing. They are working closely with the RSPCA and conducting house-to-house and CCTV inquiries to piece together the circumstances surrounding Bear’s death.
This heartbreaking incident has sparked outrage within the Norwich community, with many demanding swift justice for the animal and its grieving owner.
