Police Officer Adopts Dog He Rescued from East River

by Lisa

A heartwarming story unfolded in Manhattan when an NYPD officer adopted a dog he helped rescue from the East River. The dog, named Hudson, was found swimming alone near South Street Seaport on March 30. Authorities reported that Hudson was not injured but was brought to safety by Officer Jared DeSalvo.

After being taken to the Animal Care Centers of NYC, Hudson was held for three days. During that time, Officer DeSalvo’s wife saw a picture of the dog and immediately wanted to adopt her. On Friday, DeSalvo proudly announced that he and his wife had officially adopted Hudson.

“I think it sets a good example in terms of compassion, making sure we take care of those that need help,” DeSalvo shared. “It’s a unique situation where we get to actually do a little bit more.”

This rescue highlights not only the compassion of Officer DeSalvo and his wife but also the ongoing efforts of animal care organizations to find loving homes for animals in need. Hudson, once a stray in the East River, now has a forever home with the very officer who saved her.
