A local couple is being praised after rescuing a dog trapped in the rushing waters of the Yuba River on Wednesday afternoon.
Tiffany and Jason Ramos were hiking near the South Yuba Fork Bridge when they heard a dog whimpering. They soon spotted the animal, later identified as “Zen,” stranded on a rock as river currents surged around her.
Fearing the dog might be swept away, the Ramoses retrieved ropes from their truck and managed to reach Zen. However, the steep terrain made their climb back difficult, and they became temporarily stranded with the dog.
According to Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Supervising Animal Control Officer Stefanie Geckler, the couple was eventually assisted by a passing pair of hikers, one of whom was a climbing instructor.
Thanks to their combined efforts, the Ramoses and Zen made it back to safety. Zen was later reunited with her owner, who had been hiking nearby with another dog when Zen vanished.
“While we don’t ever recommend putting your own life at risk, we are incredibly grateful to the Ramoses and the unidentified climbing instructor for their bravery and compassion,” Geckler said.
