The study involved 40 dogs of varying degrees of training, with owners providing pertinent information about their pets’ characteristics. The dogs were divided into two groups to evaluate the impact of scent detection on cognitive abilities.
In one group, dogs were tasked with navigating around a transparent barrier to retrieve a treat—a challenge known as the ‘detour task.’ Conversely, the second group underwent scent training, where they were trained to locate treats hidden under pots.
The scent training regimen comprised three phases: familiarization, training, and testing. Throughout these phases, dogs were exposed to progressively more complex tasks involving the detection of scents concealed under pots.
Findings from the study revealed that dogs subjected to scent training exhibited better behavior compared to their counterparts who underwent the detour task. This suggests that scent training holds promise as an effective method for improving canine behavior and cognitive performance.
Commenting on the significance of the study, Sarah Dalesman, co-supervisor of the research, emphasized the importance of understanding canine behavior and its influencing factors.
