Chennai Airport Launches 24/7 Program to Manage Stray Dogs

by Lisa

Chennai International Airport has partnered with an animal welfare NGO to address the rising problem of stray dogs on its premises. The new program operates 24/7 with rotating NGO teams patrolling the airport to protect passengers from dog-related disturbances while ensuring the animals are treated humanely.

The airport has become the first in India to establish a dedicated dog safety and care center on-site. Stray dogs have increasingly been seen around the domestic and international terminals, causing discomfort and fear among travelers, airline staff, and security personnel. The issue gained widespread attention on social media, prompting officials to take action.

Previous efforts involved working with local civic bodies to capture around 40 stray dogs for anti-rabies vaccinations and sterilization under an animal birth control program. However, the stray dog population near the airport continued to grow, affecting not just regular travelers but also VIPs.

The new initiative focuses on humane treatment. Teams will monitor, capture, sterilize, vaccinate, and care for the dogs, while preventing any cruelty. This program aims to balance passenger safety with animal welfare and could serve as a model for other airports across India.
