Warren Man Charged After Severely Neglected Dog Found and Euthanized

by Lisa

A 43-year-old man from Warren, Ohio, has been charged with first-degree misdemeanor animal cruelty after a severely neglected dog was discovered in a heartbreaking condition. The dog, named “Baby,” was found in a basement on Saturday in desperate need of medical attention.

Animal control officer Jason Cooke arrived at the scene and described Baby’s condition as “probably the worst animal cruelty case” he had ever encountered. The dog was emaciated, hypothermic, and covered in infections, with a ruptured mass on her abdomen. Despite emergency treatment at a Salem veterinary center, Baby’s condition was so dire that she was euthanized to prevent further suffering.

The dog had been left chained in the basement with no food or water, surrounded by filth. The man, Thomas R. Leimkuehler, initially claimed that a veterinarian had seen the dog recently and deemed her condition acceptable, but later admitted that no veterinary care had been provided.

Cooke criticized Ohio’s animal cruelty laws, calling them too lenient and pushing for harsher penalties for abusers. He also highlighted the strain on local shelters, including his own, which is dealing with an overwhelming number of neglected animals.
